☕️ Probe Schmobe

Morgan Stanley CEO brushes off federal inquiries.

Good morning.

Ted certainly Pick-ed his moment to downplay the suite of regulatory probes currently being faced by Morgan Stanley, shrugging off the investigations by no less than four federal US bodies into how the bank monitors the background of its wealth management clients. The freshly minted CEO said the matter isn’t new, and that the bank has been focused on its processes for a “good while.”

It was a sage time to address the investigations, as the bank topped Q1 expectations with a 14% increase in first-quarter profits, while its wealth management division saw net new assets reach approximately US$95 billion, well ahead of expectations for US$62 billion…(coincidence? I think not).

Shares in Star Entertainment took a battering during trading on Tuesday, falling over 14% to close at $0.42, as news emerged from the casino group’s second day of the public hearings in its second NSW inquiry. During the hearings, the inquiry heard Star had difficulty in delivering completed milestones within timeframes for its remediation plan, and that the casino required continuing supervision. Special manager at the group Nicholas Weeks said: “At this point in time, I think the casino needs continuing supervision whether that's me or somebody else.” Monday’s hearing heard that the Star’s chair and former CEO has been plotting to oust Weeks during his tenure.
